Our trip to Puglia: pasta, wine and long walks

Our trip to Puglia struck the perfect balance: scenic walks, memorable food and wine experiences, and fascinating glimpses into the region’s culture and history.

In Bari, we loved exploring the town on a guided walk and sampling its local street food. The standout was spaghetti all’assassina, so delicious that we looked up a recipe when we got home and have made it several times since.

The following day brought another change of pace, with an enjoyable boat trip to the caves and a visit to Monopoli.

Plenty of steps, and plenty of smiles along the way.

Our country hotel near Ostuni was wonderful: a peaceful, tranquil retreat where we could truly unwind.

As keen wine lovers, we especially enjoyed the tasting and cellar tour at Cantine Amalberga; it was one of the highlights of the trip.

Above all, I loved the food of the region. As someone who prefers vegetarian dishes, I found the cuisine suited me perfectly, and I really appreciated how readily I was accommodated whenever meat featured on the menu.

The long walks were another favourite, taking us through wonderfully varied scenery, from open countryside and picturesque towns to beautiful stretches of coast. We loved the relaxed pace, which allowed everyone some freedom to walk at a speed that suited them. A guide stayed up front with the faster walkers while someone accompanied those at the back, so nobody ever felt rushed. The guides also varied their pace, making time to meet and engage with everyone in the group.

Rudi and Roberto (and, of course, Gianni, although that goes without saying 😊) make a wonderful team. Their knowledge and passion shine through in the way they bring each place and story to life for the group. They are also full of fun and nonsense, giving the whole tour an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere.

The hands-on activities added even more variety. I always enjoy cooking classes, and the bread-making session was great fun too.

Our visits to Alberobello and Matera were equally memorable. Both places are steeped in fascinating history, much of which was completely new to me.

There was honestly nothing we did not enjoy. It was a wonderful journey from beginning to end and easily ranks as one of our favourite trips.
