You'll arrive as a stranger. You'll leave with friends.

Most people who join a Walk About Italy tour book as a couple or on their own — not as part of a pre-formed group. The typical group is 10 to 16 people, mostly from the US, UK, Canada, South Africa and Australia, in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

By the second day, the group already has its rhythm. By the last dinner, most people are exchanging contacts and talking about which tour to do next.

"Over thirty years, I've watched complete strangers become travel companions — and then lifelong friends. That's the part of this job I never take for granted."

How much walking does this actually involve? Three levels based on daily distance, terrain, and elevation

Walk About Italy is designed for travellers who enjoy being active, but don't want a holiday to feel like a physical test. The emphasis is always on pleasure, scenery, food, and discovery at a relaxed pace — never on kilometres covered or time elapsed. As a rough guide, 3 km (1.5/2 miles) takes about one hour of walking. Most days you'll be on your feet for 1.5 to 2.5 hours, with plenty of natural stops along the way.

Easy
4.5–5.5 km · 3–4 miles/day
Mostly flat, well-maintained paths · gentle slopes only
Easy–Moderate
5–8 km · 3–5 miles/day
Some hills and uneven ground · never steep or prolonged
Moderate
Longer walks · active most of the day
Regular elevation · good fitness recommended

Each tour page lists daily distances, approximate walking time, and terrain notes — so you can judge before you book.

What if I have limited mobility? What our tours require — and what they don't

Our tours involve cobblestones, uneven terrain, and stairs — they are not suitable for people who use a wheelchair or need physical assistance to walk.

If your concern is pace — whether you'll be too slow, or whether your knees will hold up on a downhill — that's a different question. Our guides adapt to the group. No one gets left behind, and no one feels rushed.

You walk at a relaxed pace day-to-day
You sometimes need breaks on hills
You've had a knee replacement or similar
You're in your 70s — most of our guests are
Wheelchair or physical walking assistance required

What do we eat and drink? Food and wine are never secondary — they tell the story of a region

Food and wine are never secondary on a Walk About Italy tour — they are one of the main ways we tell the story of a region. Expect farmhouse lunches, regional wine at dinner, and occasional encounters with the people behind the food: a winemaker in Tuscany, a pasta maker in Puglia, a granita bar in Sicily.

Most meals are included, with wine. A couple of dinners are left free so you can explore on your own — a local trattoria rarely costs more than €20–25 a head. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and other dietary needs are accommodated with advance notice.

What's included in every tour →
04
Can I join a walking tour on my own? Solo travellers are welcome — and very common

Many of our guests travel on their own — it's one of the most common ways to join a Walk About Italy tour. Groups are small (usually 6 to 12 people, never more than 18), and by the second day most people already have their rhythm together.

If you'd like to share a room, we'll try to match you with a same-gender fellow traveller. If you prefer your own space, a single supplement gives you a private room throughout. Private tours are also available from just one person upwards.

05
What does a typical day look like? Walking, discovery, good food — and time to breathe

Most days follow a natural rhythm. Morning: meet the group, set off with your local guide through countryside, villages, or coastal paths. The walking is rarely more than 2 hours in total, with natural stops for photos, a coffee, or a view.

Afternoon: time at your own pace — the hotel is usually in or near a historic centre, so there's always somewhere to wander. Evening: dinner together (most nights), with local wine and the kind of conversation that comes easily after a day outdoors.

The best ever introduction to the wonder and pleasures of Italy

It is absolutely impossible to say how wonderful our walking tour with Walk About Italy was. Everything was curated and personalized. The quality of the experiences, the hikes and the guide, Lorenzo, were beyond expected. Food and wine experiences amazing. Knowledge of guide at the level of a polymath. Kindness, quality of accommodation and welcome of Italians so warm. We loved every moment and hope to do another trip next year. For reference, we are a fit very active 70 plus couple and found the level of walking to be accessible and enjoyable. Gianni and his team go above and beyond and we can't recommend them highly enough. Worth every Canadian penny!

Italy done right!

We have done a few trips with Walk About Italy Tours over the years and just completed the Puglia tour in October 2025 and once again they exceeded every expectation. Gianni and his team are truly exceptional, their knowledge is incredible, and they have a way of making every tour both interesting and genuinely fun. What really stands out is how they go the extra mile for every guest. The experience feels personal and intimate, and by the end of the trip, it honestly feels like you've made friends for life.

Great way to get exercise while experiencing paradise

Cinque Terre tour was absolutely a dream. Awesome walks overlooking water many times, quaint towns, good food, and an amazing guide — everyday superb. Hassle free and lovely.

Fantastic Dolomites Tour

We just completed our fourth tour with Walk About Italy and we loved the Dolomites tour just as much as our previous tours. Roberto and Rudy are excellent guides — very informative, engaging, and simply fun to be around. My wife and I joined a group of 8 others and felt like we became friends by our first dinner together. It is one of the things I love about Gianni's tours — we have become friends with people from around the world and at the end of each tour we hate to part ways. Besides the beautiful scenery of the Dolomites, delicious food, and wonderful accommodations, I also love the detailed planning and organization of each tour. The walks are very doable — don't be intimidated by the Dolomite mountains. Gianni keeps adding tours in different parts of Italy so we will keep coming back. I guess there can be multiple trips of a lifetime!

This is the only way to experience the real Italy.

This was a bucket list item and it did not disappoint! We had a great tour with our two guides, Rudi and Gianni. Very knowledgeable and full of great information all through the week. We visited great spots and off the beaten track places like a great agri-tourism farm that had the most amazing lunch with hand-crafted salami. We went to 3 lakes (Como, Maggiore and Orta), we saw castles and churches, parks and palaces, and walked all over them. This is a great way to tour and being out in the fresh air adds a nice dimension to it all. We dined in great restaurants and made good friends along the way.

Walkabout Italy, Amalfi tour

The best experience ever! I am well travelled but this took group travel to another level — seamless, excellent itinerary, well planned, super experienced guides, fantastic accommodation, too much food! Mountains, sun and sea, and so lucky as a solo traveller to be welcomed by such a diverse, stunning group of fellow travellers. Matteo and Rudi were great (and very patient 😊) and Gianni set the bar higher. So, will have to choose Walkabout Italy for the next one too! Thank you, to everyone!! See you soon.

Life changing

This was hands down one of the best things I have ever done in my life. I feel like a review won't even do it justice. Basically, if you're here reading about it, BOOK IT NOW! You won't regret it. The value for money is unreal. The guides are just wonderful. The entire experience is one I will cherish forever.
