Day 1: Bari, a delicious first hello

Arrive in Bari and settle into your Hotel. We meet for a welcome briefing before heading into Bari Vecchia with our local guide.

In its lively lanes we’ll find the famous orecchiette ladies, shaping pasta by hand outside their homes. Along the way, try a couple of Bari favourites: crispy scagliozze and fluffy popizze.

Our first dinner together is at a local pasta bistro, with a chance to discover the wonderfully bold pasta all’assassina and other regional dishes.

Day 2 – Sea caves, harbours & pizzica

After breakfast we leave Bari by private coach and head for the Adriatic. Weather permitting, a boat trip takes us along the limestone coastline from Polignano a Mare toward Monopoli, with its dramatic sea caves.

If sea conditions make the boat trip unsuitable, we enjoy Polignano on foot instead, including the Domenico Modugno statue, Lama Monachile viewpoint and historic streets.

In Monopoli we stroll through the old centre, then you have time to explore the harbour or choose your own lunch. Later we travel to Borgo Santuri, our masseria among olive trees, with time to unwind or join an optional walk in the Coastal Dune Natural Reserve.

Tonight, the rhythm picks up! Live pizzica music, a light-hearted dance lesson and an informal apericena with local wine make a lovely welcome to the countryside.

Day 3 – Vineyards, wine & the sea

We start with a countryside walk from the Casalini area, following gentle hills, small farms and scattered trulli on our way to Amalberga Winery.

At the winery we meet the people behind the wines, tour the estate and enjoy a tasting and light lunch with local products. There is no rush: the stories matter as much as what’s in the glass.

The afternoon brings some downtime at Borgo Santuri. In the evening we head to Torre Canne for dinner at a seafood restaurant with a view, before returning to the masseria.

Day 4 – Olive trees, Ostuni & a kitchen full of stories

From the masseria we walk through old olive groves to historic Masseria Brancati. Among monumental trees, we explore an ancient underground olive mill and taste the estate’s olive oil.

Then it is on to the whitewashed town of Ostuni for lunch and some free time to wander. Back at Borgo Santuri, you can relax by the pool or in the gardens.

This evening, sleeves up! During our hands-on cooking class we’ll prepare local favourites such as focaccia barese, orecchiette and braciole in tomato sauce. Dinner is, of course, what we made together.

Day 5 – Fairytale Trulli & the Road to Matera

We travel to Alberobello, where the remarkable cone-roofed trulli fill the old neighbourhoods. Our group visit is followed by time to discover Rione Monti before the busiest part of the day.

A countryside walk then leads to Azienda Ivone, where we visit the farm and sit down to a traditional lunch featuring estate products.

In the afternoon we continue to Matera and check into your hotel in Matera. The evening is yours: explore the Sassi at your own pace and choose dinner from the restaurants suggested by your guide.

Day 6 – Matera in Golden Light

Spend the morning on a guided Matera cave tour — cave dwellings, rock churches, and the extraordinary Sassi districts, explored on foot with a local expert.
A bread-making experience adds another layer to the story of this ancient city, where survival, tradition, and daily life were once carved into stone.
Later, enjoy free time before heading out for a panoramic walk in the Murgia Park.
As the sun goes down, Matera at sunset becomes pure magic — a glowing stone city facing the evening sky.

My husband and I spent 7 days in September walking the Tuscan Hills with Gianni and Rudy. As I read my journal from our trip almost 3 months ago it brings a smile to my face as I relive those treasured moments of hiking beautiful vineyard hillsides, making pasta at a local restaurant, listening to arias from well known Italian operas, drinking glorious wines with local wine makers, eating fabulous foods, learning about making cheese, doing yoga in a beautiful vineyard and listening to Gianni play his flute.Gianni’s organizational skills and ability to relate to all his guests was a large part in making this trip so memorable and enjoyable.

The Best Way to See Italy Forget Rick Steves and sign on with Gianni for a wonderful exploration of some of the best Italy has to offer–countryside, history, food, and people. Gianni’s deep knowledge of all these adds so much richness to the experience of walking through picturesque medieval towns and gorgeous rolling hillsides of vineyards, fields and orchards. The accommodations were comfortable and centralized, often with wonderful views.Although this was a tour through the areas surrounding Siena, Montalcino and Pienza, Gianni offers tours in other areas and I would expect the same high level of engagement and effort to provide unique experiences. Truly exceeded my expectations!

Under the Tuscan Sun…and a big black cloud but only once I have just returned from 8 fabulous days with Walk About Tuscany hosted by Gianni and Rudy and helped by their hard working transportation crew who ensured we were picked up on time, we traveled safely and no luggage was lost. We had many moments of fun and laughter and even a couple of flute recitals just for a change of pace!! In the end, I have Gianni to thank for this experience. His thoughtful organization and attention to detail were key in delivering a superb product, a memorable adventure and a trip of a lifetime. Walk About Tuscany is highly recommended! Grazie, Gianni

The unforgetable Tuscany I am so amazed with Gianni who operated our tour with his in-depth knowledge of every single steps and buildings around Tuscany. Not to mention his creativeness in every moments of our walks. You will have great lunches and dinners with lots of special-2-thumbs-up wines. We also visit Olive Oil producer and given sampler at which is the best (and fresh) olive oil that I had ever tasted ! The scenery view is very awesome, just like the post card. Highly recommended and wouldn’t mind to do this tour again.

Group Tour of Tuscany Hill Towns with Walk About Tuscany Tours I had a marvelous time on this trip. Our guide, Gianni, provided gorgeous walks and unique experiences with local organic producers of wine, produce, cheese, and olive oil. Definitely experiences I couldn’t have had without his guidance and that helped me to appreciate what makes this region unique. Gianni is knowledgeable and expended every effort to ensure that our trip was memorable and unique. We walked, ate very well, drank wonderful wines and learned a great deal about this region of Tuscany and why it is among the most delightful of all Italy.
